A powerful and timeless depiction of how
intolerance and hysteria can tear apart any community
It's 1692, in the Puritan New England
town of Salem. The local minister catches a group of young girls,
including his daughter Betty, dancing the woods. Betty falls into
a coma-like state and a crowd gathers around the Parris home, spreading
rumors of witchcraft.
Thus begins the spiral into darkness,
based on the historical events of the 1600s, but written in the 1950s as
an allegory for the anti-Communist "witch hunts" that whipped up
political tensions and spread paranoia and fear through the United
States.
The Crucible's incredible power is in
its ability to transcend period - asking its characters to rise above a
climate of fear, to be true to themselves in the face of community
pressure, and to resist ruining others' lives due to small-mindedness
and intolerance. The play's intensity makes it appropriate for
middle school and up. Younger than 6th grade admitted with a parent or
guardian.
